  2. In 1854, an Act of Consolidation brought all these municipalities together under the common name of Philadelphia. The “original” Philly became known as “ Old City Proper.” This is what we today call Center City. That phrase was first uttered around the turn of the 20th century, when newspaper ads started referring to the “Center of City.”

    Originally, Center City was not just Philadelphia’s only neighborhood, it was the whole city. When the city was planned in 1682, Surveyor Thomas Holme and Philadelphia founder William Penn mapped it out between South and Vine Streets to the North and South and to the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers on the East and West.
